Creative Ideas for Teaching the Bible to Kids

Where, Oh Where, is Solomon Found: A Game that Teaches the Books of the Bible August 03 2018, 0 Comments

Here is a fun game that teaches the Books of the Bible and their main characters. Do your kids know what book or books Solomon can be found in. Or how about Noah or Elijah or Deborah or Jesus? Play this game and your kids will be well on their way to knowing more about God's Word, the Bible.

Several years ago, I came up with a game that teaches the Books of the Bible and their main characters for my large group of elementary kids.

I wanted them to become more familiar with the names of each book of the Bible along with their main characters. "Where, Oh Where, is Solomon Found" was born and the kids had a lot of fun with it.

Here's how to play "Where, Oh Where, is Solomon Found"

A Game that Teaches the Books of the Bible For this game, you will need the following items:

1. Cards that show the names of the books of the Bible. You can make your own or you could purchase my downloadable product called "Bible Book Cards" for only $5.00. Here is a sample picture of what my cards look like.

Click HERE to learn how to purchase your own set of Downloadable Bible Book Cards.

You will also notice that my cards have points on the back, which means you can make your game even more fun by letting the kids earn points for their right choices. Choose the Bible Book Cards that you want the kids to choose from. Putting all 66 books out might be a little overwhelming. You also want to set your kids up for success. I suggest you place the cards on a pocket chart so that the whole class can see them.

2. A copy of the following little song that you will sing with the kids put to the tune of

"Oh Where, Oh Where, Has My Little Dog Gone?"

~Oh where, oh where, is (Solomon) found

~Oh where, oh where can he be

~Can you tell me where in the Bible (he's / she's) found

~Oh where, oh where can he be

(I suggest making a large poster of the song or creating a nice Power Point slide for it.)

3. A list of Bible characters that you want the children to learn in which book they are found.

4. This is optional, but I suggest that you grab some great pictures of each of the Bible characters you want to showcase in your game. You can always go to "Google Images" to find some great pictures to print off.

You are now ready to play.

Simply sing the song with the kids using the name of the Bible character that you want them to find. Show the picture of the character, if using pictures. Let a child come forward and pick a Bible Book Card that he believes contains the character. If you are using points with your Bible Book cards, then the child receives that number of points for his team.

That's it! Have fun!

Highlights of God's Beautiful Garden Program by The Scripture Lady August 01 2018, 0 Comments

Here are some highlights of God's Beautiful Garden program perfect for ages 2 - 6. This program will teach your young children that their lives are like a garden in which God wants all HIs goodness and truth to grow.

These highlights of God's Beautiful Garden will give you a sneak peak into the elements of my newest program I was able to debut this past June 2018.

This is a program that I have wanted to write for a few years, but haven't got around to it till now.

I love the truth that according to John 15:1, God. the Father, is our gardener. He wants the best fruit and flowers to come forth out of our lives as we follow Him. He also wants to keep away the "weeds" of sin so that our lives are filled with His goodness.

......................................

Let me present you with four videos giving highlights of God's Beautiful Garden:

Eve's Beautiful Garden

If we are going to talk about gardens, we MUST talk about the very first garden God made, the Garden of Eden. This fun part of the program introduces Eve to the children.Eve sings to the kids and tells them just how beautiful God made her garden. This song showcases Steve Axtell's Talking Frame.

Marvelous Marvin, the Amazing Inchworm

This idea showcases my self-hanging puppet box out of which Marvin appears. Marvin plays a game with the children to teach them about some of the different flowers he likes to crawl around on and let's the kids count the petals.

Seeds of the Trinity Game

In this program, I wanted to take the opportunity to teach the children about the concept of the Trinity. This is no easy task, but one that I think can be introduced even to our young ones.

The Little Flower Pot

"The Little Flower Pot" is one of my fun object story lessons that I love to share! The story is about a little flower pot who learns that God has a plan for her just like God has a plan for all of us.

Scripture Grids: A Super Bible School Activity for Elementary Kids July 28 2018, 0 Comments

Are your kids aware that God is always near them?  Philippians 4:5 says this: “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”  This is a small but powerful verse.  Not only are we to remember that God is always near us, but because of this truth we need to treat everyone with gentleness.

To be gentle means to be “mild in temperament or behavior; kind or tender.” (New Oxford dictionary)  Some of our kids can get pretty selfish and hotheaded, so I think this is a verse that they should memorize.  Here’s a fun Bible memory verse activity to help them do just that.  It’s called “Scripture Grids.”

Here’s what you do: If you are able, create a large grid on your floor that has 12 sections – 3 columns and 4 rows.  I use tape to create mine and I make it at least 6 feet high.  Next prepare 12 cards that will be placed in the grid.  The first 12 cards will each have one word from Philippians 4:5.  The 12th card will have the reference Philippians 4:5 written on it.  Place these 12 cards on the grid in correct verse order beginning in the top left square.  Finally prepare a set of point cards as follows:

1.  Row 1, Column 1 = 10 points

2.  Row 1, Column 2 = 20 points

3.  Row 1, Column 3 = 30 points

4.  Row 2, Column 1 = 40 points

5.  Row 2, Column 2 = 50 points

6.  Row 2, Column 3 = 10 points

7.  Row 3, Column 1 = 20 points

8.  Row 3, Column 2 = 30 points

9.  Row 3, Column 3 = 40 points 1

0. Row 4, Column 1 = 50 points

11. Row 4, Column 2 = 50 points

12. Row 4, Column 3 = 50 points

13. Sorry

14. Sorry

Place these cards in a bucket or basket from which the kids will pick.  You are now ready to play the game.

How to play:

Divide your class into 2 teams. A child from team one will come forward and pick a point card out of the basket.  Have the child find the correct card on the grid and turn it over.  He must now say the whole verse including the missing word.  If he does so successfully, he earns the points on the card.  The play goes to the next team.  The game will get harder as each word is turned over.  If a child chooses a SORRY card, his team loses a turn.  The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Before playing the game, you might want to introduce the lesson in the following way:

Who would like to read Philippians 4:5?  (Wait for response.)  Does this verse say that God is far away or near?  (Wait for response.)  That’s right.  God is always near us.  This verse also says that because He is near us, we should be gentle to all we meet and in all we do.  To be gentle means to be “mild in temperament or behavior; kind or tender.”  It’s important to remain gentle and kind in this life even when it’s hard.  God will bless you for it.  He loves you and cares about you and is always near you.  Let’s play a fun Bible memory verse activity to help us learn this Scripture and hide it in our hearts. It’s called “Scripture Grids.”

How to Share the Gospel with Preschoolers July 25 2018, 0 Comments

Here is a practical article on how to share the Gospel with preschoolers along with creative ideas to do so.

Who doesn’t like to hear good news? Adults and children alike love being the recipients of good news. And preschoolers are no different. God has wired the preschooler with extra quantities of joy when hearing good tidings I believe, and in my mind, they are ready to hear the best news of all - the Gospel, or good news, of Jesus Christ!

In its very essence, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is simple: God made you. God loves you. God wants to have a relationship with you. But you are a sinner, which prevents the relationship from happening. But God loves you so much that He was willing to do what it took to bring you into relationship with Himself. So, He gave His only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for the forgiveness of your sin. But Jesus did not remain dead. He came back to life and lives in Heaven with His Father, God. When you believe that Jesus died for your sin, you can now have a relationship with Him that will last forever.

Yes, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is simple, but deeply profound and ultimately life changing. As teachers to preschool children, how can we begin to share the Gospel effectively with these little ones God has placed within our care? I believe the key to accomplishing this task is in the word “begin.”

You must begin sharing the main points of the Gospel and God’s Word at the child’s level. Begin sharing God’s truths carefully and simply and the Holy Spirit will begin to give them understanding little by little - just as He has done for you.

So, let’s look at the main points of the Gospel and I will present you with some creative ways to share God’s wonderfully good news with your little ones.

....................

Point #1: God Loves You!

Preschoolers are “love-sponges.” If you are willing to poor some love into their lives, they are usually ready to receive. They are even ready to receive the fact that they can be loved from afar by a long distance family member such as Grandma or Uncle Bob. Preschoolers are definitely ready to hear that God loves them. I believe God wants us to tell our children that He loves them as much as we possibly can.

Here is a link to give a creative way to share the truth that God loves your preschoolers:

A Story of God’s Love:

http://scripturelady.com/a-story-of-gods-love-a-valentines-day-presentation/

....................

Point #2: God Made You

Preschoolers are fascinated by their bodies. Sometimes they just like looking in a mirror to discover more about who they are. And God knows everything about them, even the number of hairs on their head. At this age, it is important to carefully navigate your children through the differences they may see with other children. I work closely with children and adults with special needs and I always focus on their abilities and the hearts that God has given them. God, Himself, says that He looks at our hearts. That is His focus and it should be ours as well. Teaching your children at an early age to discover a person’s true heart will be one of the greatest lessons you can ever give.

Here is a link to give a creative way to share the truth that God made your preschoolers:

How Did God Make You?

....................

Point #3: God Wants to Be Your Friend

While God has made preschoolers to be very self-absorbed at this age, they are also learning fundamental social skills. In other words, they are learning how to be a friend. Friendship can be a frustrating road at any age, and preschoolers are also figuring out how to navigate around different personalities. But God can be their very best friend. He’ll never make fun of them. He always wants to be with them and He wants to share His love with them. who doesn’t want a friend like that?

A friend keeps his promises. Here’s a creative way to share with your little ones that God always keeps His promises:

http://scripturelady.com/gods-promises-for-preschoolers/

....................

Point #4: Sometimes I Do Wrong Things Called Sin

I love CEF’s (Child Evangelism Fellowship’s) definition of sin: Sin is anything I think, anything I say or anything I do that makes God unhappy. This is the definition I use when teaching about sin to preschoolers. Although they are young, they are becoming very aware when they do something wrong. When you see a preschooler commit a sin, I believe you need to take them aside and lovingly point out what they did wrong, who or what got hurt (if anything), and then point out the truth that God does not like it when we sin. As the Holy Spirit is teaching this child through your leading and guidance, the child will become more aware and sensitive to doing wrong. They must then go and say they are sorry for what they’ve done and tell God they are sorry, too. Unfortunately, we live in a society that squelches the practice of doling out consequences for our wrong doings, but as Christians, we have an obligation to teach our children early on, that when they sin, they are doing so against God.

....................

Point #5: Jesus Died to Forgive Your Sin and Is Alive!

This Gospel point is the Easter story in a nutshell. It’s also the most sensitive point to share with preschoolers. While I am a proponent of sharing the message that Jesus died on the cross, I encourage you to be very aware of the sensitivities of the children whom you work with. You should never share the gory details of this part of the Gospel with your little ones. But you can point out the fact that Jesus loved your children so much that He was willing to be hurt for them. Preschoolers already understand pain. They know what it means to bleed and have scrapes and “owies.” As the Holy Spirit works in their lives, prayerfully they will become more aware of Jesus’ great love for them and slowly, but surely, understand His great sacrifice.

The following is a link to my story, The Little Hill. This is a great rendition of the Easter story at a preschool level.

http://scripturelady.com/the-story-of-the-little-hill-a-preschool-easter-lesson/

....................

Point #6: I Believe in Jesus! and Someday I’ll Live with Him Forever!

The last main point of the Gospel to share with your preschoolers is the chance for them to declare that they believe in Jesus and eternity with Him. As mentioned before, preschoolers don’t need to see Jesus to believe in Him. They are children and Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14) I believe God made this profound statement to remind us that our faith in Him must be like that of a little child - you don’t have to see to believe.

Should you ask your preschoolers to believe in Jesus? In my opinion, absolutely! Do they know and understand everything about the Gospel? No, but with any kind of learning, you must let the child declare what he does know to be true at the time of his learning. God is using you to help build a relationship with Him truth upon truth.

Here is one of my favorite ways to share the Gospel with preschoolers:

....................

In closing, if you haven’t already started to share the good news of Jesus Christ with your preschoolers, begin now and begin well!

Who Am I?: A Bible Memory Verse Activity for Kids for Colossians 3:16 July 24 2018, 0 Comments

A Bible memory verse activity is a great way to teach God's amazing Word and here's a Bible game based on Colossians 3:16.

Colossians 3:16 says this:  “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish with all wisdom and as you sing psalms, hymns and spirituals with gratitude to God.”  When the Word of God dwells richly within our hearts and our minds I believe this means that we are familiar with God’s Word.

The Bible’s stories, characters and truths are not strangers to us.  You are learning to know them well and God’s word is enriching your life.  Here is a fun Bible memory verse activity to see how richly God’s Word dwells within you.  It’s called “Who Am I?”

Here’s what you do:

For this Bible memory verse activity you will need to prepare picture cards for the Bible characters listed below.  On the backs of the picture cards write the statement associated with each character.  You will also need to prepare 21 point cards – 4 (10 point cards), 4 (20 point cards), 4 (30 point cards), 4 (40 point cards) and 5 (50 point cards).  On the fronts of the point cards write the game title “Who Am I?”  Laminate all your cards for long-term use.  Place all the point cards title side out on a pocket chart or lay them out on a table.  The picture cards should be fanned out in your hand from which the kids will pick.

How to play:

Divide your class into 2 teams.  Have a child from the first team come forward.  Have him point to a point card.  Turn it over to reveal the number of points he could possibly earn for his team.  Now read the statement on the back of the picture.  The child will now make a guess as to who the person is in the picture.  If he guesses it correctly he earns the number of points he picked.  If he does not make a correct guess, the other team gets a chance to guess.  If they are correct, they will earn double the amount of points that were picked.  This will make for a more exciting game.

Before playing the game, you may want to introduce it in the following way:

Raise your hand if you can tell me about someone you are familiar with or know really well.  (Wait for responses.)  Do you guys think that you can know God’s Word really well just like knowing your best friend or a family member?  I believe you can.  I know it is my desire to have God’s Word dwell within me richly.  Who will read Colossians 3:16?  (Wait for response.)  I’m curious how well you guys know the Bible.  How comfortable are you with knowing its stories, characters and truths?  Let’s play a game called “Who Am I?” to help us learn to know God’s Word even more.

List of Bible stories:

1. Adam – My first-born son, Cain, killed his brother, Abel, and became the first murderer.  Who am I?

2. Noah – I told many about the coming flood, but in the end only myself, my wife, our 3 sons and their wives were saved.  Who am I?

3. Abraham – God told me that my ancestors would number more than the stars in the sky.  Who am I?

4. Hagar – God protected my son Ishmael and I after Sarah had cruelly sent us away.  Who am I?

5. Lot – God told my wife not to look back at Sodom and Gomorrah as we were fleeing for our lives.  Who am I?

6. Isaac – I was doubly blessed.  My wife gave birth to twin sons – Jacob and Esau.  Who am I?

7. Esau – My brother Jacob tricked me out of my birthright, but later I forgave him.  Who am I?

8. Jacob – I fell in love with Rachel, but my uncle tricked me on my wedding day and I ended up marrying Leah instead.  Who am I?

9. Joseph – My brothers threw me in a well, but what my brothers meant for evil, God meant for good.  Who am I?

10. Moses – My mother protected me from being killed when I was a baby and hid me in a basket made of reeds.  Down the river I went until I came to an Egyptian princess.  Who am I?

11. Pharaoh – My firstborn son died during the plague of death.  I let Moses’ people go.  Who am I?

12. Aaron – while Moses was on Mt. Sanai receiving the 10 Commandments, I encouraged the Israelites to build a golden calf and worship it.  Who am I?

13. Joshua – Caleb and I went to spy out the land of Canaan that God promised to give us.  Who am I?

Zero, 100, or Bonus - A Bible Memory Verse Activity for Kids - Luke 2:14 July 21 2018, 0 Comments

A Bible memory verse activity is a great way to teach God's amazing Word and here's a Bible game based on Luke 2:14.

Luke 2:14 says this: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." As a Christian, I have been taught that my main purpose in life is to glorify God.  What exactly does this mean?

Well, I am no scholar, but I did hear a great sermon on this topic once and though glorifying God can be a deep theological point, I walked away with an elementary explanation that has helped me ever since.

To give God glory means to reflect all that He is in my life.  In other words, when people look at my life, I should desire that they see more of God’s character in me than my own sinful character.  In fact, the word GLORY spelled backwards gives a great acrostic for its meaning – You Reflecting Our Lord God.  Kind of neat, huh?

I think this is a concept our kids can grasp.  And here is a fun Bible memory verse activity to help them learn Luke 2:14 and more about giving glory to God.  I call it “Zero, 100 or Bonus.”

Here’s what you do:

For this game you will need to prepare 3 cards.  One will say “Zero”, one will say “100” and one will say “Bonus”.  Place these 3 cards in a bag or bucket from which the children will pick.  You will also need to make up 12 point cards – 3 of 200 points, 3 of 300 points, 3 of 400 points and 3 of 500 points.  Place these point cards on a pocket chart or on table face down.  Finally, you will need the Bible review questions found below.

How to play:

Divide your class into 2 teams.  After introducing Luke 2:14 to your class and reciting it several times, explain that several will have the chance to say the Bible verse correctly and thus earn points for their team.  Have a child come forward.  He must answer a Bible review question on glory correctly.  If he does, he then gets to reach in the bag that has the 3 cards.  If he picks the “Zero” card, he earns no points and the play goes to the next team.  If he picks the “100” card, he earns 100 points for his team.  If he picks the “Bonus” card, he gets to pick one of the point cards and earns that number of points for his team.  He also can earn another “Bonus” point card if he says Luke 2:14 correctly.  If he does not say it correctly, the second “Bonus” point card will go to the other team.

Before playing this game, you might want to introduce the lesson in the following way:

When you look in the mirror, whom do you see?  (Wait for responses.)  Of course, you see yourself.  But when you look in the mirror, do you ever see God there?  (Wait for responses.)  OK.  So, you’ve never seen God staring back at you in the mirror, but did you know that you could at least see the reflection of His character.  In other words, God is kind and loving.  Are you ever kind and loving?  (Wait for responses.)  Sure.  Many of you have been kind and loving to me!  When you are showing God’s character in your life, you are reflecting who He is to those around you.  You are giving glory to God. Who wants to read Luke 2:14? (Wait for response.)  The angels sang this verse to the shepherds in the fields when Jesus was born.  It was their desire and it is God’s desire that we reflect Him in all we do.  Let’s play a game to help us learn more about ways we can glorify God.  It’s called “Zero, 100 or Bonus.”

Lyrics to LOVING

L-O-V-I-N-G, You, O Lord, are loving

L-O-V-I-N-G, You, O Lord, are loving

No matter if I’m good or bad

No matter if I’m happy or sad

No matter if I’m glad or mad

You, O Lord, are loving

L-O-V-I-N-G, You, O Lord, are loving

L-O-V-I-N-G, You, O Lord, are loving

No matter if it rains all day

No matter if no one can play

No matter if I don’t get my way

You, O Lord, are loving.

L-O-V-I-N-G, You, O Lord, are loving

L-O-V-I-N-G, You, O Lord, are loving

Psalm 62 verse 12 says, You, O Lord, are loving

Lyrics to My Father's World

Author: Maltbie D. Babcock (1901)

Tune: English Folk Tune

This is my Father's world,

And to my listening ears

All nature sings, and round me rings

The music of the spheres.

This is my Father's world:

I rest me in the thought

Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas--

His hands the wonders wrought.

How to Tell a Bible Story - “What’s in the Bag?” July 15 2018, 0 Comments

What’s in the Bag? - Here is a creative way of how to tell a Bible story to kids to keep them engaged and listening.

Read the following “transcript” of this video and learn how to tell a Bible story using the creative idea called “What’s in the Bag?”

If you’d like some great Bible review games or Bible verse songs for your kids, go to www.scriptureladyshop.com for creative resources for your children.

I learned about this creative form of Bible storytelling from a children's curriculum writer named Tina Houser. I highly encourage you to go online for her great curriculum for the Christian classroom. She is fun, energetic and an inspiration to me in my own ministry.

For this form of Bible storytelling, you are going to take any Bible story and separate it into a number of sections. So, if you chose the story of "Creation," that really lends itself nicely to be separated into 7 sections because there are 7 days to the story of "Creation." Then you will find an object that best describes or depicts each part of the story. You will place each object inside a bag.

For example, I went to my local "dollar" store and bought colorful bags and then went to my computer and created colorful number stickers that I placed on the front of each bag.

Sticking with the story of "Creation" I separated my story into 8 sections and I chose the following objects to place in each bag:

Bag One: A flashlight (Let there be light. Genesis 1:1-5)

Bag Two: Cotton balls (Let there be sky. Genesis 1:6-8)

Bag Three: Dirt (Let there be dry land. Genesis 1:9-13)

Bag Four: Suntan lotion, a toy star, and some swiss cheese (Let there be sun, moon and stars. Genesis 1:14-19)

Bag Five: Toy birds and fish (Let there be fish and birds. Genesis 1:20-23)

Bag Six: A Barbie doll and a boy hero action figure. (Let there be people. Genesis 1:24-31)

Bag Seven: A sleeping mask. (God rested on the 7th day. Genesis 2:1-3)

Bag Eight: A bag of candy to give out to the class to end by saying, "And God saw all that He had made and said that it was very good!" Genesis 1:31

Once you have all the bags filled, you will hand out a bag to each child. If you have less than 8 children, you can double up on the bags, if more than 8. the children will have to take turns.

You will then begin telling the story of "Creation" by asking, "Who has bag #1?" That child should come forward and pull out the object from the bag. As he pulls out the flashlight, you might say, "Hey, what does a flashlight have to do with the story of Creation?" Wait for his answer, then proceed to tell the first part of the story of Creation either from your Bible or perhaps with Power Point slides.

Continue to ask each child to come up with the next bag until all the bags have been brought forward and the full story has been told.

"What's in the Bag?" is a very fun and engaging way to tell a Bible story. It uses fun everyday objects that you can probably find around your house or at your local "dollar" store.

This form of Bible storytelling is great for both preschoolers and elementary children.

The Four "P's" of Sharing God's Word with Kids: Passion - Part One July 10 2018, 0 Comments

The Four "P's" of Sharing God's Word with kids requires a passion for the Bible!

I think passion scares people. I know it has stirred feelings of unrest in my own heart at times.

For example, I will never forget the picture that was shown on the news soon after 9-11 of Osama Bin Laden. I found myself staring into his eyes and saying to myself, "That man is passionate." I have no doubt that man believed with every fiber of his being that he was completely justified in the terror he inflicted.

There's a situation at my church that has left me feeling uneasy about our new pastor's passion. Our new teacher of the Word came on the scene about a year and a half ago and has pretty much turned everything upside down. If I am honest, it has been difficult to see all the changes.

His passion is not wrong. It's biblically spot-on. I have no doubts that God has given him the passion that he has, but I finally realized that my uneasiness lies in the fact that I don't embrace the same passion.

Therefore, all the changes have caused some doubts and fears and actually people have walked away from the church.

But I am choosing to stay. Because the new pastor is biblically correct in his passion, I am choosing to cheer him on.

God may never give me the same passion my pastor has, but I would want my pastor to cheer me on in my own God-given passions as I choose to encourage him. I've given two examples of passion - one completely misguided and the other completely biblical. I think our society is scared of passionate people because true passion actually produces change.

People, for the most part don't like change. They want to stay in their cozy recliners and watch the world go by. They think it's safer that way. Yet...Jesus was passionate. His passion bleeds through the red letters of your Bible. His passion turned the world upside down and created eternal changes in the men, women and disciples He loved. His passion sent the accusers of the adulterous woman slinking away in their own guilt. His passion led a ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus to confront his own unbelief. And Jesus wants His passion to change you too.

So, as a teacher of the Bible to children, whether in the home or classroom, what is your passion? We will address this question in part two of The Four "P's" of Sharing God's Word with Kids: Number One - Passion.
